Chapter 8: Thomas Jefferson, Champion of Democracy

Louisiana Purchase – Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory in 1803 from Napoleon for $15 Million. It was the biggest piece of land ever sold and 15 states were made out of the land. It was an important purchase because it meant that the United States could keep on growing and become a large country.

Sacajawea – She helped Lewis and Clark on their expedition. She helped by giving them directions and helping them to communicate with the Native Americans they met on their journey.
Lewis and Clark – They were two explorers who set out to explore the area known as the Louisiana Territory. They brought back important information about what the land looked like, how big it was, what kind of animals and plant life there was. They traveled for two years and at times it was a very difficult and dangerous journey.
