History Chapter 3 Review Sheet

The Holy Land is in the part of the world we call the Near East.

The biggest city in the Holy Land was Jerusalem.   Jesus was born in the Holy Land.  He was born, lived and was buried there.

The Catholic Church had its start in the Holy Land.  Catholics liked to visit the Holy Land so they could pray where Jesus lived.

The Turks captured the Holy Land.  They were not Catholics.  They hated the Catholic religion and spoiled many churches.  They also robbed and killed Catholics.

In 1095 the Pope asked the people of Europe to rescue the Holy Land from the Turks.  This Holy War was called a Crusade.  The soldiers were called Crusaders.  The word Crusade means marked with a cross.

Crusaders crossed the Mediterranean Sea to reach the Holy Land.

In the Near East, crusaders saw things they had never seen before!  Merchants sold rugs, silks, emeralds, pearls, spices and china that had come from the Far East by camel train.

In the Italian cities of Genoa and Venice may wealthy merchants sent ships to the Far East so that they could buy and sell goods.

The Crusades lasted for 200 years.  At the end, the Turks were still in charge of the Holy Land.

Even though the Crusaders did not win, the Holy Wars still changed the lives of people in Europe.  It helped people get interested in other parts of the world.  The wars also caused people to buy and sell goods from the Far East.
