Columbus read Marco Polo’s book and learned about his travels.
Since Columbus thought the earth was round, he wanted to reach the Far East by sailing West.
The Spaniards would not help Columbus get money for his travels because they were in the middle of a war.
Fr. Juan Perez spoke with Queen Isabella of Spain so Columbus could get money to travel to the Far East.
The three ships of Columbus were named the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
Columbus found an island in the Bahamas and named it San Salvador which means “Holy Savior.”
Columbus thought he had found land near India, so he called the people in the New World Indians.
Columbus was surprised he did not find any riches in the New World because he thought he was near India.
Columbus died in 1506.
In 1498 Vasco da Gama sailed all the way around Africa and found the Far East.
The Portugese thought that Vasco da Gama was a greater hero than Columbus because he had a load of spices, silks and jewels.
