Present Tense: Singular: is (The dog is the winner.) am (I am sleepy.)
Plural: are (We are near the park.)
Past Tense:
Singular: was (The dog was the winner.)
Plural: were ( We were near the park.)
Direct Objects receive the action of the verb.
We ate candy. Ate is the verb and candy is the direct object.
Verb contractions
Pay special attention to:
You’re/Your: You’re is the contraction you are
(check yourself by replacing the word with you are) Your is a possessive pronoun.
It’s/Its: It’s is a contraction meaning it is.
Its is a possessive pronoun. (It will answer your what?)
They’re/Their/There:
They’re is the contraction for they are.
Their is the a possessive pronoun. (It will answer their what?)
There is an adverb telling where.
