Chapter 5, Prince Henry’s Sailors

Prince Henry ran a school for sailors.

Prince Henry wished to find the Far East so ships could bring goods from the Far East to Europe.

Prince Henry also wanted ships to go to the Far East because he was a good Catholic.  He wanted to convert the pagans.

Pagan means someone who does not know about God.

Prince Henry thought that he needed to sail around Africa in order to get to the Far East.

Prince Henry had as school for sailors so they could learn how to read a compass and to read the stars.

After Prince Henry died, the Portugese sailors reached Cape Verde on the coast of Africa.

Bartholomeu Diaz sailed around the southern tip of Africa in 1486.

King John of Portugal named the tip of Africa the Cape of Good Hope.
