A Peek At The Week

Looking Ahead
- Free Dress Day for a week for Kindergarten January 10th – 14th.
- Phonics & Math assessments #10 & Spelling List #8 on Tuesday, January 11th, 2011.
- Phonics words to focus on and code this week are zoom, good, shake, yet, mix, van, picnic, smell, joke, & glass.
- The children are looking forward to our 100′s Day Event. When we reach a 100 days that we have been in school we will celebrate by having your child bring an item that are 100. An example would be 100 M&M’s or buttons etc. We are at 75 days of school so far.
Important
- Coats for P.E. & outside play & a snack everyday. Preferably items your child can fix on his/her own. Include forks, spoons & plates. Our dishwasher is broken & we are limited on cleaning dishes at this time.
Home Connections
- Please have your child read to you at least 20 minutes each night. Reading old titles already read in past is great also. I will let students choose from their library sets to take home & read to you.
- I will be sending home phonics short vowel yellow books 1-10 & green long vowel books 1-10 to increase improvement with your child’s reading fluency, comprehension & vocabulary skills within their readiness level.
- Please ask comprehension questions after each story & have your child answer verbally. I ask questions regarding assigned stories read for homework the next day in class.
Classifieds
Please have your child bring their favorite story books from home to share with class especially if they can read on their own without help. The kids love to play librarian & act out these stories.

A Peek At The Week
- Religion: Feast of Saint Faustina.
- Phonics: Lessons & Homework 21-24 Sounds, keywords & writing letters b, c, k & the rule to syllable division.
- Math: Lessons & Homework 21-24. Write numbers 19-22. Writing addition sentences, identifying ordinal position 1st – 6th, addition fact doubles to 10, identifying sides & angles of a rectangle.
- Spelling: at, lot, lap, nap, pat, tan, lip, tap, zip, pit. Sight Words are oh, what, who, was & put.
- Readers: Max’s Dragon Shirt, Lost at the Pond, & Sass.
Looking Ahead
- Spelling Test on Friday, October 8th on list & sight words.
- We are going to see Miss Nelson Is Missing play on Wednesday, October 6th from 9:00 to 2:00.
- Please provide a sack lunch with snack included. Depending on weather we will stop & have lunch in a park after the play.
- Please return permission slip & cost of $7.50 if you haven’t already before the play. If your child does not have a permission slip with signature, he or she will not be able to attend.
Important
- Some students still need a smock or an old shirt to paint in art class.
- Some students are not completing their homework. I will provide extra incentives to those who do remember to complete & return.
Home Connections
- I will be sending home thisweek “My Favorite Saint” paper. Discuss what Saint your child would like to dress up as for All Saints Party on October 29th.
- In addition to phonics & math homework there will be homework in spelling & reading each night with your child as well.
- I have sent home with your child the phonics packet for parents homework answers. You will be able to know what your child is learning in each lesson & know what some of those pictures are in the homework.

Parents would you like to come in and read to class? Please see me we could also tape record your voice reading from home.

- Phonics: Lessons & Homework 16-20. Sounds, keywords & writing letters s, d, f, h, g, r, k. One-Syllable words such as sad, got, fan, rag, hit with suffix -s.
- Math: Lessons & Homework 16-20. Write numbers 15-18. Counting Pennies. Identify season. Dividing a solid in half.
- Geoboards: inside & outside. Sorting by one attribute. Counting pennies & using the hundreds number chart.
- Spelling: Know how to code & first two spelling rules.
- Spelling List Words it, pit, bit, fit, sit, in, win, fin, pin, sin
- Readers: Nat & Don, Max’s Dragon Shirt.
- Science / History: Healthy Habits & Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Looking Ahead
- Assessments in math, phonics & spelling on Friday, October 1, 2010.
- Your child filled the pebble jar with some awesome behavior. We will reward with a treat they voted to have to make an arts & craft project. I’m thinking maybe making Spirit Shakers or Spirit Bands in class.
- We are scheduling to see a play about Miss Nelson is Missing. Cute book! The kids can relate recently since I needed a substitute filled in for me this past week.
- Sending permission slips soon in your child’s folder.
Important
To keep your child’s uniform clean from paint and other messy activities, please provide an old shirt to use as a smock. Washable paints & markers are also helpful.

- Your child will also be bringing home prayer books made in class to read at home with you. My goal is to have each child memorize and recite all prayers by the end of 2nd quarter.
- In addition to phonics & math homework there will be homework in spelling as well.
- Would like to have a skit performed by Kindergarten to share during homecoming week.

To make the shakers in class I will need a few items you may have around the house. Small plastic bottles . Maroon, blue, & white beads.

- Geoboards: inside & outside. Sorting by one attribute. Counting pennies & using the hundreds number chart.

Looking Ahead
- Assessments in math, & phonics Wednesday, Septemember 22, 2010.
- Spelling Test over list words on Friday, September 24th.
- We want to get the spirit stick by this Friday. “Spirit Shakers” would be a nice touch! Please see FHS Cheerleader for details to purchase.
- We will be taking a field trip to see the play Snow White. I will be sending home permission slips soon with all the details.
Important
Mr. Mamola, the art teacher, request that your child has a smock or old shirt to use to cover their uniforms when they paint on Monday, September 27th.

- Have your child bring an apple for class by Thursday, September 23rd.
- Discuss what Saint your child would like to dress up as for All Saints Party on October 29th.
- If unable to purchase “Spirit Shakers” you and your child can create your own shakers. I would like them to be ready by Friday before pep rally, if possible.

Donated items needed for classroom are markers and watercolors. If you want your child to use this type of art media then you can supply only for your child.
