Homework September 29-October 3

September 29, 2008

Dear Parents,

September is almost over and fall is here at last!  As we approach October, I want to let you know that I am making a few small changes that I think will help things run more smoothly.  First, I will be sending home an October calender this week that will have test dates so that you and your child no well in advance the dates of tests and quizzes.    Second, I am moving the due date for Mr. Popper’s Penguins to Wednesdays.  This is because we have a religion quiz every Tuesday and generally Science quizzes and tests will also be on Tuesday.  The reading and reading comprehension worksheets will now be due on Wednesday.

As for the week ahead…

We will be taking our science unit 2 test tomorrow.  We have been reviewing in class, but please go over the material with your child.  On Friday we will finish Unit 1 of history with a short quiz on chapters 4 and 5.  In religion we will have a quiz tomorrow on chapter 4 and we will begin chapter 5.

In writing we will be finishing our state research paragraphs and moving onto a more fun creative writing assignment.

This week in 3rd grade we will:

In grammar, G.U.M., we are learning about prepositions and prepositional phrases.  The students will have to  know their prepositions in order to identify prepositional phrases in sentences.  To this end I will be sending home a list of prepositions and requiring the students to memorize a set each week.

In science we will continue our study of insects. We will conclude unit 2 this week and will spend time reviewing all that we have learned.  Be sure that your child is reviewing their science study guide, the test will be next Tuesday, September 30.

In history we are continuing to read and learn about the Revolutionary War. Everyone did very well on their history test last week, which made me very happy.  We are continuing on with the Revolutionary War this week and will finish unit 1 next week.

In religion we will be learning about discussing the Fall, angels, and God’s saving grace.

The students need to begin reading chapters 5 and 6 of Mr. Popper’s Penguins and complete the assigned worksheet found in their yellow folder.

We will be combining our study of the states with writing this week as we practice writing research paragraphs.  Thank you for helping your child fill in the state research worksheet.

This week in 3rd grade we will:

In grammar, G.U.M., we are reviewing types of sentences (asking, telling, commands, and exclamations).  Diagramming will get a little more complicated, with the addition of  compound subjects.

In science we will continue our study of insects.  Hopefully this week our painted lady caterpillars will arrive and we can begin our observations of a butterflies going through the different stages of complete metamorphosis.

In history we are continuing to read and learn about the Revolutionary War.  This week we will meet George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and other important American heroes.  We will have a quiz on Friday, so please help your child to prepare by going over with them the notes they have taken in class.

In religion we will be learning about the Old Testament, the New Testament, the prophets, and parables.  We will also spend some time talking about the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

The students have finished the rough draft of their Island of the Blue Dolphins book report and I am very impressed with their writing.  They will do a final draft this week.  They need to begin reading chapters 3 and 4 of Mr. Popper’s Penguins and complete the assigned worksheet found in their yellow folder.

Please note that your student will be bringing home a short assignment that they may need your assistance with.  Each student will be assigned a state that they need to learn a few things about.  The student needs to fill in a short worksheet and bring it back to school by Monday, September 22.  We will use this information to write reference paragraphs next week.

Homework September 8-12

As our first full week of school I expect that the 3rd grade class will really get into the swing of things.  Things this week will really take off so please note some new assignments that were not homework last week.  We will begin our vocabulary book this week and each night your student should study a few words to help prepare them for Friday’s test.  We will also be starting to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  We will begin the reading in class, but the students will be required to finish the reading at home and to do a worksheet that corresponds with each chapter.  This assignment will not be due until the following Tuesday, in this case Tuesday, September 16.

In grammar we are reviewing subjects and predicates, and diagramming simple sentences.  The students will have 2 short grammar assignments for homework this week to help reinforce what I am reviewing with them in school.  We will also be writing book reports for our summer reading book, Island of the Blue Dolphins.

In history we are discussing the lead up to the American Revolutionary War and in science we are learning about insects.

It is going to be a busy week, but I think the students are ready for it!

This schedule is different from the homework outline sent home.  This is because we are on a four day week.  Also we will start our vocabulary book next week.

Please note that there is grammar homework on Wednesday night.  Although it is not listed in the homework outline, there will now be a short grammar assignment on Monday and Wednesday nights.
