Students will be tested on the selected reading material during the first few class periods at the beginning of the new school year. We believe that a summer reading program will help continue the academics achieved during the school year, and enhance reading, comprehension, and vocabulary skills during the off-time in the summer. The summer reading test will be their first English / Reading grade for the 1st quarter. The test will also include details and questions that you cannot find in Cliff’s Notes, similar study aids, or movies.
READING STRATEGIES: It is important that you physically engage the text by reading actively. This process implies that the reader use a pen, pencil or highlighter to underline the important details of the novel. Remember that the summer reading test will cover the content of the text, so concentrate on underlining the important details of Character, Plot, Setting, and Theme.
- Character: Any of the persons involved in the story, or the distinguishing moral qualities and personal traits of a character.
- Plot: The sequence of incidents or events of which the story is composed.
- Setting: The context in time and place in which the action of the story occurs.
- Theme: The central idea of a literary work.
