Science
Science Department
Four years of Science are required, including biology and chemistry, to satisfy the science requirement.
7th Grade
Earth Science
Earth Science deals with the science of the earth and space. Students learn map skills, astronomy, geology, meteorology, the effects of weathering and erosion on the earth and oceanography.
8th Grade
Life Science
Life Science is the study of all living things. Students in this course study topics on anatomy and physiology. They learn about cell types and functions, functions of major body systems, and an introduction to different areas of medicine. The course also covers nutrition, exercise, health and fitness.
Freshman Physical Science
Two Semesters; 1 credit. Physical Science deals with the study of matter and motion. It begins with astronomy, instruments of astronomy, and space exploration. The nature of force and energy based on Newton’s three laws of motion which includes calculating work, power, acceleration and velocity. Fluid mechanics is introduced, which includes Pascal’s principle, gas laws, Charles’s Law, the Bernoulli principle and Archimede’s principle. The first two laws of thermodynamics and their applications are studied, as well as the transfer of heat. The study of electricity and magnetism are also studied.
Sophomore Biology
Two semesters; 1 credit. Biology is required for Sophomores. Biology uses an inquiry approach into the six kingdoms of life, life processes, and their environments. Topics include: scientific method, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, cell reproduction, genetics, evolution, taxonomy, diversity of life, and systems of the body. Laboratory investigations and scientific articles are incorporated into the curriculum.
Junior Chemistry
Two semesters; 1 credit. Chemistry is required for all Juniors. It will include experiments that deal with consumer chemistry as well as consider the basic topics of chemistry: atomic structure, kinetic theory of gases, the periodic table, acid-base theory, equilibrium, stoichiometry, and SI units.
Senior Physics
Two semesters; 1 credit. Physics is required for all Seniors. Physics is a course dealing with the main topics of physics: mechanics, optics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics. This is a quantitative course that requires extensive problem solving and a quarterly project.
