Religion Study Guide for Chapter 20-22
Test Thursday, April 3
All through the ages God’s children have offered sacrifices to God as a sacrifice. In Jesus’ time people offered up lambs, doves, and food as a sacrifice.
God wanted to give His people a gift that would reunite them with Him. He gave Jesus as the perfect gift. Jesus offered Himself as a perfect gift and sacrifice to God.
What is the Holy Mass? The Holy Mass is the Sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The Holy Mass is offered on the altar by the priest of God, under the appearance of bread and wine, in memory of the Sacrifice of the Cross.
Mass is the very same sacrifice that took place on Calvary.
There are two parts to the Mass: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist
During the Liturgy of the Word we hear the readings, the responsorial psalm, the Gospel, and the Homily. The Gospel is the “Good News” of Jesus. It is his words and actions recorded for us.
We also say the Nicene Creed. This is a profession of everything we believe as Catholics.
Are we obliged to go to Mass? We are obliged to go to Mass on Sunday and on the Holy Day of Obligations. During the Mass Jesus unites us to Him during Holy Communion.
The Holy Mass is the greatest prayer.
The Consecration is when the bread and wine are turned into the Body and Blood of Christ. It seems like ordinary bread and wine, but is in fact the Body and Blood of Jesus.
