Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had  a most blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!  :) 

Since we are just coming back from break, we will be constantly reviewing, rules, rewards and procedures.  I will send home a sheet with your child with all of these things this week- please be sure to review it with them.

I can’t believe we’re in the third quarter already!  I’ve seen the children progress and I look forward to watching their successes in the third and fourth quarters.

Science Review

 

God gave each animal instinct.

Instinct tells an animal what to do.

 

Each kind of animal is different from every other kind of animal.

Can a baby kitten grow up to be a dog?

            No, kittens will always grow up to be cats!

 

Some baby animals are born.

Almost all animals that are born drink MILK from their mothers.

 

Baby bears are born in the winter. Why?

            This is the time when the mother bears are hibernating.

What does it mean to hibernate?

            To hibernate means to sleep through the winter.

 

            Baby bears are born in winter while Mother Bear is in her cave. When they are born, the bear cubs are not bigger than kittens. They are blind and helpless. They eat and sleep and grow for many weeks beside their mother.

 

How many mice can a mouse have?

            Up to nine at the same time!

What is the size of a baby mouse?
            The mouse is no bigger than a jellybean when he is born!

 

What is one of the biggest babies?

            The Blue Wheal is one of the biggest babies when it’s born.

            He is as big as an elephant when born!

                        When he grows up he will grow to be 30-50 elephants put together!

 

Name two animals that live in pockets.

            Opossums & Kangaroos

Mom Opossum can have up to 18-20 babies at a time!

            They are the size of a dime!

 

A baby kangaroo is called a joey.

 

Could baby opossums and baby kangaroos live if their mothers did not have a pouch? Why, or why not?

 

Know the life Cycle of a Frog.

  1. Egg
  2. Tadpole
  3. Back legs grow
  4. Front legs grow
  5. Tail gets shorter
  6. Jumps out of the water.

 

What is the elephants nose called?
The nose of the elephant is called a trunk!

 

Is the trunk the elephant’s mouth?
 No!

 

When the Elephant wants to drink water, how does it use its trunk to drink?
It uses its trunk like a straw. It does not swallow the water through the trunk, but it uses it to blow the water into its mouth!

 

God gave the elephant small eyes. So, to help him know that danger is coming God gave the elephant:

a.       Big ears to hear things approach.

b.      A large, powerful nose, to smell danger!

Flat feet that feel the vibrations of the animals that are getting closer.

After Herod died, the Holy Family went to live in Nazareth.

Joseph was Jesus’ foster father.

Mary was the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus.

Mary kept the home for the Holy Family.

Jesus was obedient to Mary and Joseph.

For a job, Joseph was a carpenter.

The Father of Jesus is God.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the Holy Family.

Through Baptism, Jesus is our brother.

Jesus always did what was pleasing to His Heavenly Father.

The children must be able to list five ways they can follow Jesus’ example in their own families.

(e.g.) I can be obedient when my Mom asks me to clean my room.

or

I can pray with my family.

I can hardly believe it is Christmas break already!  Please note that I would like each child to make a card for his or her ADVENT ANGEL.  This is due Wednesday (the day of the Christmas party.)  Remember, NO GIFTS- only cards!  :)  Thank you!   I hope that you have a wonderful CHRISTmas and a restful break!

Quiz Tuesday, December 18 There are 6 ways to recognize a bird:  size, shape color and markings, behavior, and habitat.  

Size:  To judge the size of an unfamiliar bird you should become familiar with the sizes of three common birds. 

1.      Sparrow – 5-7 inches long

2.      robin - 10 inches

3.      Crow – 20 inches

Shape- notice if the bird is plump or slender.  Is the tail wound, square, pointed or forked.  Is the beak thick and heavy or narrow and long?

Color and Markings – Some birds can be recognized by their field marks, or special patterns in their plumage. 

Look to see if the bird has a crest on its head.  A crest is the feathers on a birds head. 

Behavior – many birds have unusual ways of flying, walking, or perching.

Habitat – a particular kind of area where it lives, such as a forest, meadows, or wetlands.

Specific Birds

Finches are seed eating birds

Thrushes usually eat insects and fruits

Wren – small, stocky brown bird

 Purple Finch –

“looks like a sparrow dipped in raspberry juice”

eats seeds, wild fruits and insects 

Cardinal

sings and whistles throughout the yeareats insect pests such as boll worms and potato beetlesdoes not migrate 

Goldfinch –

7th Grade: Review on refering to people and things using indirect on direct object pronouns.

8th Grade: We will be practicing regular verbs ending in AR-ER-IR.

6th Grade: Review verb DECIR and work on pg.61 EX. A-B and C. Pg.62.

7th Grade: Continue on Pgs. 136-137 Ex. A-B and C.

8th Grade: We will finish reviewing vocab. of Unit 7. Study guide for test will be given.
