English Study Guide
Quiz Tuesday, December 4 Action verb expresses or shows an action that the subject is doing. Being verb state a fact. Memorize the conjugation of to be: is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been
Present Tense: Singular: is (The dog is the winner.) am (I am sleepy.)
Plural: are (We are near the park.)
Past Tense:
Singular: was (The dog was the winner.)
Plural: were ( We were near the park.)
Direct Objects receive the action of the verb.
We ate candy. Ate is the verb and candy is the direct object.
Verb contractions
Pay special attention to:
You’re/Your: You’re is the contraction you are
(check yourself by replacing the word with you are) Your is a possessive pronoun.
It’s/Its: It’s is a contraction meaning it is.
Its is a possessive pronoun. (It will answer your what?)
They’re/Their/There:
They’re is the contraction for they are.
Their is the a possessive pronoun. (It will answer their what?)
There is an adverb telling where.

Our Presidents
George Washington
· Led our army in the Revolutionary War
o In the Revolutionary War we fought against England.
· Was a man of Faith
· First President of the United States.
· Can be found on the dollar bill.
· He is called, “ Father of His Country.”
· As a child he cut down his father’s tree with his hew hatchet.
o When his father asked who had done it, George was honest and said the truth.
Benjamin Franklin
· He did not go to school! He was so poor he did not have money to go to school!
· He worked very hard to teach himself new things.
· At the age of 12 he began printing books.
o Poor Richard’s Almanac
· He said, “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man health, wealth, and wise
· He said, “ Little strokes fell great oaks.”
· He signed the Declaration of Independence and helped write the Constitution.
Abraham Lincoln
· 16th President
· His favorite book was the Bible
· Abraham’s nickname is “Hones Abe”—Be sure that you know why!!
· Although he did not go to school much, he taught himself and became a lawyer.

· In 1860 he was elected president.
· There were 33 states by the time he was president.

With just three full weeks left until Christmas break there is a lot of work to get accomplished before then. I expect the next three weeks to busy, but also a lot of fun. I have several advent activities planned to really highlight the season and the importance of advent. It should be a lot of fun.
